with love, william-adolphe bouguereau

Oh, don’t mind me.
I’m just appreciating the work of French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) in complete aw.
There was no way for me to pick just one painting, so allow me to show you just some of my favourites.

La Tricoteuse (The little knitter), 1882
La famille indigente (Indigent family/Charity), 1865
Au bord du ruisseau (At the edge of the brook), 1875
La Bohémienne (The bohemian), 1890
Psyche et L’Amour (Psyche and Amour), 1889
Nymphes et satyre (Nymphs and satyr), 1873
La vierge au lys (The Virgin of the Lilies or The Madonna of the Lilies), 1899
La Nymphee (The Nymphaeum), 1878

And my absolute favourite

Humeur Nocturne, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1882)
Humeur Nocturne / Le Crépuscule (Evening mood), 1882

I love William-Adolphe Bouguereau as much as I love Caravaggio but in different ways.
They’re so opposite each other, like the Gemini-Sagittarius axis or the Aquarius-Leo axis, where William-Adolphe is the master of light and Caravaggio is the master of darkness.
I feel the need to come up with a new word to describe this mans paintings and work, since the word beautiful just isn’t enough. Exquisite? Magnificent? Spectacular? Astonishing? Breathtaking?
Either way, whatever word I would come up with just wouldn’t be enough to describe them.

Other paintings I’ve written about:
The birth of Venus
Portrait of a black woman
Judith beheading Holofernes
The execution of Lady Jane Grey
Piazza San Marco
The swing
